Not crap. He and his band came to town a few years back as part of an 'experimental music fest', they were badass. They were selling handmade jewelry at the merch table. I haven't heard all of the new album yet, but what I've heard so far is really good.
"Whatever happened to that album?"
"I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall and it like, shattered."

Love it.

Guy has a lot going on, too.

“We’re suffering because we’re colonised by France which hasn’t given us freedom. On paper we have our freedom but in reality, we aren’t free. French colonialism has just taken the model and modernised it, in the same way that if you take a car manufacturer, Toyota for example, the Toyota from 1980 is not the same as in 2020, but it’s still Toyota. And it’s the same thing with colonialisation. We’ve been colonised since the French descended on our territory and we got independence in 1960 on paper but it’s still France in charge. France is exploiting us for our [uranium] mines while 95 per cent of people in Niger don’t have electricity. And yet we have so much uranium! That’s why I gave the album the name Afrique Victime.”

I just got this record without knowing anything about the band behind it. Brilliant. Thank you for the link.

I love this about Tuareg guitar though! And other African guitar musics. I don't like that kind of modulated guitar sound generally, but hearing it outside of the "normal" context it just hits different and I can accept it as it is.

A great way to obviate dumbass "Gear Acquisition Syndrome" impulses (i.e. shopping addiction) is to watch a random Sahel-based guitarist on YouTube absolutely destroy the asses of most guitarists who have Wikipedia pages, using an "Academy"-brand Strat and a Behringer amp with built-in multi-FX.

Mdou Moctar is terrific. He and Bill Orcutt are my favourite "new" guitarists in town. Very grateful that I've gotten to see him live.
