Cohen.

Small waffle/clarifier:

I see Malkmus as more of a frontman/rhythm guitarist where his chords were carrying the songs he wrote much of the time, and that's what they were for. I know he plays some fun leads, but Malkmus strumming a jazzmaster is about the song for me, the way some other person strumming an acoustic is.

Cohen had a greater importance as a guitar player, and of course he could do the other thing on his awesome tunes.

Anyone that gets annoyed by Pavement/Jicks, I totally get it. I love Pavement. Malkmus' guitar playing on the surface is nothing really that extraordinary but when you take a step back and notice how odd and smart it really is it is pretty great. Cohens guitar work is great but hasn't ever turned my brain quite as much. His stuff always seems to really make sense for what is going on. The thing I like about SM guitar is that it often seems like it shouldn't work but somehow works out great. If you have a wormy brain, Malkmus hits a spot.

Huh. One of the things I like about Cohen's lead guitar playing is it frequently seems to start from a place that is familiar enough to be comforting and then take that to the nth degree, just enough that it starts to get a little weird. Like he rides the line between a laugh being exuberant and maniacal.

Ever since wearing out Slanted, I haven't really thought too much about Malkmus' guitar playing. What are the jams that'll make me change my mind?
