Filmmaker Wes Anderson

I've heard visceral hatred from film fans at the mention of Anderson's name. It's very easy to see what is in his stylized and sometimes precious approach that irritates people. Still I've usually enjoyed his films and felt myself something of an Anderson apologist, without being very good at explaining why.

Yup, NC. He is clear on what he likes, both in subject matter and form, and has been doing it long enough to demonstrate he’s doing it in good faith. His films are cake, and on occasion I like cake. Saw “The French Dispatch” on Saturday and enjoyed it, including while groaning at his cherry-picked clichés (the bestial painter, the manifesto-obsessed French students, the perfectionist Japanese chef). Perhaps there’s nothing other than sponge under the marzipan, but it doesn’t stop it from being a good cake.
