I guess they're all kinda "punk" in some aspects. But not really punk, in the God save the queen-white riot style. You know whay I mean. Or maybe mot. You could say there's some "artiness" there. Are they post punk? Dunno the span of years that term covers.
I was tempted to add the Cure, but they belong to the mid eighties onwards really. The same could be applied to KJ, but Coleman and Co. Were such a kickass band already in 1979 whereas Cure stuff from that era is just ok, very derivative and simplistic.
Choose one. 1977-1980. Just wanted to check your opinion on that specific lapse of time.
I think I'd go with Joy Division . I'm not the greatest Curtis fan but that MUSIC hasn't been topped.
I mean, something like "dead souls"; nobody could capture that magic back in the day.
Then maybe Magazine (those three LP's!) and Kj.
Re: Some british punkish bands from the late seventies.
2I should probably listen to Magazine before voting, but I gave Wire the edge over Joy Division just for longevity. I mean there's some great New Order stuff, but that's probably beside the point.
Re: Some british punkish bands from the late seventies.
3All great but I'm all in for KJ.
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.
Re: Some british punkish bands from the late seventies.
4It is a toss up between Wire and Joy Division. I guess Joy Division by virtue of concision?
Re: Some british punkish bands from the late seventies.
5The run of Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154 is pretty fucking stunning, really - there’s something magical about putting out those 3 records that were so distinct from each other, but so connected to the band making them. All in only 22 months!
Wire. No brainer for me.
Tangent - I often think of the run of My Disco’s three accessible records (Little Joy, Severe and Environment) as having a bit of a modern parallel, which would be a fun discussion.

Re: Some british punkish bands from the late seventies.
6So we're talking specifically the period 77-80? Seems a bit unfair to Killing Joke then since they only really got going in the 80s.
Out of these I pick Joy Division. Never been a huge Wire fan. I like them, but not worship level. Never got into Gang of Four. I would pick Siouxise and the Banshees over both of those.

Re: Some british punkish bands from the late seventies.
7Joy Division is the worst of these. Gang of Four easily in that period.
Re: Some british punkish bands from the late seventies.
8I’d say let Gang of Four and Killing Joke have their ‘81 albums, just to let them get two in the running.
This. It’s a tough call, except it’s definitely not Joy Division. Gang of Four. Is it because they’re so different from the others? Maybe, but part of it is just how unique they are generally speaking.jakethesnake wrote: Joy Division is the worst of these. Gang of Four easily in that period.

9Magazine doesn't even belong in this group.
Joy Division, Gang of Four are great, but not on the same level as Wire and Killing Joke.
But Wire's output in the specified time period is untouchable.
So Wire.
If you widened the time frame, KJ climbs back up close, since several of their later records are good. (2003 S/T is especially great) but after their 80s hiatus, Wires' records are almost all good, so I think Wire wins again.

10Wire, no question. I’ve never really been able to get into Joy Division or PIL, and Gang of Four Justin isn’t for me at all. I’m not familiar enough with KJ or Magazine.
Widen the date range out a bit, and the correct answer might be The Fall.
