Like anything that gets over hyped there is a backlash, but there is no other Christmas movie with that tone. Humorous cynicism, working class reality and SO Midwestern. It's great.

Having it play in the background on Christmas Day (during TBS's 24-hour marathon) with my family is good enough. Some parts still make me laugh. My Mom always says that one of her friends told her I looked like Ralphie as a kid.

Those that I’ve known who grew up in the 1930s swear by the authenticity of all aspects of its depiction of the homes, sets, characterizations, dialogue and frustrations of the period. A pretty sharp snapshot of its time and place for those that experienced it from the same vantage point as the characters within.

Something that should be kept in mind by those who can only view it through the eyes of the 21st century.

Midwestern gentle cynicism. Not crap.

You can watch it, and see a film where a Karl Colchak who has seen way too much is just trying to adjust to the regular life while trying to forget half of what he's seen.

Automatic "Not Crap..."

My kid played Ralphie in our community theater run of the musical. Not crap.
