I never really gave them a listen after Gentlemen, which I love.
In Spades is really good!
Re: Band: The Afghan Whigs
2After many attempts I am completely fine with not having the capacity to enjoy the music of the Afghan Whigs.

4I like but don't love. Dulli's croon is more effective than his shout. Cool guitar riffs and grooves. There's a creepy sexual energy on some of their stuff that never totally sat right with me. That's totally subconscious/subjective btw and may not be a defensible argument.
Re: Band: The Afghan Whigs
5Could be off-base but I remember the band having some similar characteristics as Shudder to Think except without the eccentric singer, and, in turn, also less interesting. I don't dislike them, but they kind of fade into the background for me at this point.
Could go either way with waffles. I'll go with a tentative NC.

6Since this will probably be another one that will be more "Sparsely Attended Wake..." than "C/NC..."?

8Normal 90s rock band + soul influence + killer rhythm section + evil Randy Newman
Not crap
Of course, the best Whigs song is “My Curse” which Marcy Mays sings. But I feel like Dulli might agree with that.
The SXSW performance where they did an impromptu set with Usher (Whigs covering “Climax,” Usher leading “Something Hot”) is delightful

Re: Band: The Afghan Whigs
9Gentlemen is a good album. I haven't followed much of what they've done since they've reformed. I saw them a few years ago, and they were better than I expected. To end the show, they did 'Faded' with a bit of Bobby Womack's 'Across 110th Street' thrown in. Not crap!
"Whatever happened to that album?"
"I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall and it like, shattered."

10Congregation, Gentlemen, and Black Love are all fantastic records. But I also like a lot of Up In It, 1965, and In Spades.
Super not crap for me. Waffles for some lyrical misogyny. There was a time when they were among my favorite bands of all time. I saw them on the Congregation and Gentlemen tours and they delivered both times.
