You know the ones, back before veganism* was cool and it was the only fake burger patty out there, predates the Gardenburger. I still love these things and I'm not even vegan.

Edit: Not vegan, contains egg whites. Also gluten. Fuck, can't eat anything anymore.

2I don’t think I’ve ever had the original grillers, but their spicy black bean patties are my go-to. Love them.

3The Morningstar stuff all tastes pretty good. Crappy union busting company the last time I checked though.
Do they predate Boca? Those were the first ones I bought.

4Pretty sure Boca was first. Def my least favorite of the three mentioned. If I’m going to eat a fake meat burger, these days my first choice is Beyond Meat by a landslide. Impossible is fine in a pinch though. I do love a good veggie burger that isn’t trying to be fake meat though. I forget who makes it, but there’s a Indian spiced one made from potato that is fantastic.
Morningstar Farms was never vegan but they previously made an “everything vegan by 2024” goal a couple years ago. No idea if they are still on that path. Love their fake fried chicken type things.

5Yeah, I think it was Ground Control where I had a very good beet burger. Haven't seen it on a menu since, but I've made them a few times and they turned out good. Egg seems to be the magic ingredient for veggie burgers, and true vegan patties without gluten are harder to pull off.tommy wrote: Mon Apr 17, 2023 9:09 am I do love a good veggie burger that isn’t trying to be fake meat though. 6The most sick I've ever gotten without alcohol being a factor was when I ate two of those on white bread with mustard and pickled ginger.
I'll vote Crap, even though the product didn't actually make it to crap status.

7Yeah it was the only veg meat brand available around where I grew up and the burgers were decent. I thought the spicy chicken nuggets were great.
Gardein/Beyond/Impossible meats blow them out of the water these days imo. Veg/vegan meat has really come a long way in recent years.
Re: Vegan Food: Morningstar Farms Original Grillers
8I’ve been pescatarian for like 5 years and off red meat for around 10. For, you know, the various reasons, though I still like meaty flavor and I agree the impossible/beyond stuff is a better new class of meat free. Almost too good, I had a beyond breakfast sausage recently and it was very realistic smelling in the pan, in kind of an unappealing way. It looks like lab grown meat is moving forward and I wonder what that will be like, and if I even would want to try it.
My absolute favorite veggie (not vegan) Pattys are from Cooks Illustrated that’s real savory and doesn’t try to be a beef analogy. Takes for-fucking-ever to make though:

9I had lab-grown meat a while back and it was terrific, if uncanny given the uniformity of its marbling.

10I still eat meat, unfortunately, but sometimes I long for mass produced veg(etari)an stuff. Oat milk, in particular.
Morningstar is a shitty company and just an OK patty. The O Organics ones are far superior though. There's a kale one and a black bean one that are both really good. You can't microwave the O Organics ones to good results, though, but I usually have 10 minutes available to use and wash a pan.
