Back in thee day, I liked early Tad but really liked most Mudhoney.
These days I find Mudhoney thoroughly mediocre, and unlike their indie peers, I can't really say there's even one really great album to justify their reputation (though the Superfuzz + Singles comp comes close, but it ain't in the same league as say You're Living All Over Me or Daydream Nation or whatever). I was such a fan as a kid and can recall their pre-reunion albums note for note, but now I can't stand their hipster garage band / Nuggets-worship evolution, that grew so boring so quickly: their songs were rarely strong enough and their musical volcab was so extraordinarily limited so it sounds twee-retro.
I guess if you formed a band, tossed off some pretty cool songs and everyone liked them, then you could get into the habit if thinking that was how it works; but post-Superfuzz they sound so lazy.
Tad I think are the archetype Sub Pop grunge band - not necessarily the best or my fav, but they do that "punks-gone-HEAVY sound while ironically embracing 70s rock vibes" thing perfectly on God's Balls and Salt Lick. Was never mad convinced by songwriting development on 8-Way but after that the drummer upgrade turned them into a ROCK MACHINE par-excellence: they really got very good at delivering the goods, but w/out an image or gimmick it would never be enough for the majors and they had an awful run of luck career-wise (that Busted Circuits... documentary tells that tale very well)...
Even though I'll say it's a tough call between their Sub Pop material, Tad's severely superior musical evolution gets them my vote.
