Re: (in the) Kingdome: Tad vs. Mudhoney

Back in thee day, I liked early Tad but really liked most Mudhoney.

These days I find Mudhoney thoroughly mediocre, and unlike their indie peers, I can't really say there's even one really great album to justify their reputation (though the Superfuzz + Singles comp comes close, but it ain't in the same league as say You're Living All Over Me or Daydream Nation or whatever). I was such a fan as a kid and can recall their pre-reunion albums note for note, but now I can't stand their hipster garage band / Nuggets-worship evolution, that grew so boring so quickly: their songs were rarely strong enough and their musical volcab was so extraordinarily limited so it sounds twee-retro.

I guess if you formed a band, tossed off some pretty cool songs and everyone liked them, then you could get into the habit if thinking that was how it works; but post-Superfuzz they sound so lazy.

Tad I think are the archetype Sub Pop grunge band - not necessarily the best or my fav, but they do that "punks-gone-HEAVY sound while ironically embracing 70s rock vibes" thing perfectly on God's Balls and Salt Lick. Was never mad convinced by songwriting development on 8-Way but after that the drummer upgrade turned them into a ROCK MACHINE par-excellence: they really got very good at delivering the goods, but w/out an image or gimmick it would never be enough for the majors and they had an awful run of luck career-wise (that Busted Circuits... documentary tells that tale very well)...

Even though I'll say it's a tough call between their Sub Pop material, Tad's severely superior musical evolution gets them my vote.

Those Mudhoney singles and Superfuzz weren’t just great. They also caused everything around them to suddenly make sense. I still love that stuff to pieces, though at some point in recent years I began to prefer the b-sides to the a-sides. (“Burn It Clean” might be my favorite Mudhoney song.) The S/T is also really good, and they’ve had their moments since then too, but nothing is as vital as their first year. Then again, that first year is really, really vital.

But I voted Tad because that run from God’s Balls through the “Salem” EP is perfect. (I mean, come on. My username.) Salt Lick is my favorite by a hair. “Jack Pepsi” is glorious.

Like everyone above I dig Mudhoney’s Superfuzz + Singles. It super dug it, somehow don’t own a copy. I got Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge used for $3 in a goodwill back in high school and liked it just fine. I was just learning guitar and thought it was great I could play along. I then more or less forgot they existed for the next two decades.

But I’ve listened to Tad even less. Gonna fix that based on this thread!

Thanks FM jfv!

Straight in for Mudhoney.

I love Tad I really do, but Mudhoney literally changed my life and brought me back to my Black Flagish guitar playing self after a brief dally with technical death metal. Fucked if I know what I was thinking there, but I was hanging out with a lot of music college people. Anyhow, holy shit, Mudhoney are great. They are slowly turning into Metallica for me as I do not like anything that they have recorded since '93, but whatever. Give me <'94 Mudhoney, Gasshuffer, Tad, The Monkeywrench, Bloodloss, Nirvana, and I'm good.

I flipped from that stuff straight to the Chrome Cranks, Early Blues Explosion, The Workdogs, all of underpinned by The Scientists, Blue Cheers, and the first Two Stooges albums. You can imagine. twang twing twang, bzzzzzzzzz....
"lol, listen to op 'music' and you'll understand"....
