I know this has been around for absolutely forever, but I just started using it for a few fringe things. I find it fucking dreadful, and overrun by teenage social media types just carpet-bombing the thing with garbage posts about new tattoos and other childish attempts at validation. Nobody reads to the bottom, and the amount of reposts of the same exact thing are completely unchecked. The voting mechanism is mostly arbitrary, meaningless and confusing. On top of that the whole thing is absolutely fucking clogged with advertising masked as topics. I don't get it, and can't understand why people prefer this to a proper forum for a band, author, or hobby.

More helpful than Google these days.

I found a discarded vacuum cleaner that needed some parts replaced and there was a Reddit thread about the same exact model of vacuum with a professional vacuum repairman holding forth on replacement parts for this brand etc.

And now the practice space has a clean carpet.

I also learned all there is to know about seasoning cast iron skillets and now my pans are PERFECT.

I've never signed up or posted but I do look at it all the time.

I wish it were better but it’s the best we got.

I want to live my life on sort by controversial mode. That’s where the good stuff is.

There’s a lot I don’t understand about karma and rewards and monetization and bots.

I hate that you can’t trust anyone on there.

I hate mods that ban me and allow much worse.

I hate the whiners. Take your downvote like an adult.

Sorry I’m whining. Not crap. I’ll come back with my favorite subreddits later.

Post yours!

of course, my caveat is the same for any social media:

limit yourself and your kids' screen time. don't get sucked into the toxicity if you are prone to that sort of thing.
spend some time lurking and voting before commenting and posting.
and don't take it too seriously (unless you should. https://www.reddit.com/r/RBI/)

The internet is supposed to be a young man's world but twitter and reddit are two formats I was only able to comprehend as an adult. I don't love reddit. Mostly because of all the junk-content, makes it look like a place no one cares about. I think the way a user's posting history is displayed is crap, you know this endless, continuously loading strip. Why does everybody do that? Just have numbered pages, it works.

But there are also some good subforums.

I still visit pretty regularly, but I nuked my account about a year ago because I posted a rejoinder to some asshat in the Joe Rogan sub, and then had a post removed from a different sub a few days later because I had posted in Joe Rogan's sub. I responded with terse profanity, whereupon I was banned from the sub and got a week's site ban and a warning from a full mod. I told the site mod they could fuck all the way off and deleted my account. Every so often I will wish I could post to a thread I'm reading, but I'm over it, pretty much.
