I'm not very into death metal and such, but love their old stuff up until and including Human. After that not so much, but they never sucked.
Holy cow does the drums on Leprosy kick ass.
Re: Band: Death
2Not crap. One of the best (both eras).
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.
Re: Band: Death
3My wife who is very much not a death metal person (she's more of a thrash, nwobhm, doom, type fan), heard "Lack of Comprehension" and was immediately pulled in and got very interested in Death. So Death may gateway in more death metal into her diet. I am going to sprinkle in some Napalm Death around and see what happens.
Death rules. I love the early stuff, mid-period is not quite as good, but still pretty great. After that I like some tracks here and there.

4I've always thought that Spiritual Healing bridged the gap quite well.

5yeah, it totally does, and i think it was the first one i ever bought. i dunno, im never as compelled to pull it out as often as some of the earlier albums. more of a me thing than an album thing.Krev wrote: Sat Mar 15, 2025 4:12 pm I've always thought that Spiritual Healing bridged the gap quite well.

Re: Band: Death
6Yep. Never understood how people drew a line at Human or Symbolic. Listen to a bunch of Dark Descent bands or whatever and then come back to those albums. Legendary shit.
Re: Band: Death
7I love Spiritual Healing and don't understand why some fans dismiss it. Sure I'd put it slightly below Leprosy or Human, but it might be my third fave.
Individual thought patterns, though I really like it, seems a bit all over the place and they start to go full "technical" and it gives me "style over substance" feelings.
Symbolic might be my least favorite, mainly because of the production.
SOP I love the sound of those drums but don't like Schuldiner's singing. I like it a bit more than Symbolic.

A bit of a stretch but it still makes me laugh.

Re: Band: Death
9Since both subjects are in the Top 5, original God of Thunder vs. Death cover?
I think Chuck's cover of Painkiller was great aside from the vocals coming up short.

Re: Band: Death
10SBG + Leprosy are great, Human is one of my favourite records ever and ITP is cool. Symbolic went with the trend at the time of a lot of death metal bands streamlining their sound, it was decent enough, I guess, haven't heard it in ages. TSOP, I'm usually all for weird playing, but the drumming on it annoyed me to no end. The singing wasn't exactly the cherry on top, either. I liked Control Denied better at the time.
Spiritual Healing sounds like Chuck trying to move the music to a different place, but with the wrong band. So stiff. Once he got the Cynic guys it took off like a Concord.
I always had a problem with every Death song having the same structure, I don't get it.
