Howdy friends,
I'm on the hunt.
I started messing around on a communal practice kit a number of years ago and now find myself playing in a couple of different groups. Trouble is, the communal kit has now gone away.
So now here I am, a gear idiot, with the new long-term prospect of owning my own kit, but without the experience to know the value.
I have a pretty good idea of who the manufacturers are, big and boutique, and some sense of cost scale, but certainly not to any depth.
Any input or advice (buy this, stay away from this, if you find X used, snap it up) would be extremely useful. I don't have thousands and thousands to play with, but I can put up a substantial amount if it is a good deal, and I'm not going to want to replace them in a couple years. Snare suggestions definitely help as well. I'm flush with cymbals and stands, for now.
Just need drums.
Have looked at craigslist/etc. but lack the differentiation skills to know what would be worth it. Have not been to Andy's or The Drum Pad yet.
Also, any deals that might be flushed out via this board's various networks and communities would be great via post or PM, like this one for example.
Advance thanks,
C

2No matter what you decide on, keep checking Craig's list and call EARLY when you see something good.
My co-worker bought a classic Rogers kit in great shape, with a full set of Zildjians, for $400. The following week a great Gretsch kit came up, without cymbals, but with hardward, for the same amount.
People just want them gone, and they are a pain to sell on Ebay.

3My friend has toured Pearl Exports for years and swears by them. You can snag a decent kit of those pretty cheap.
I know very little about drums so this may be a completely useless piece of advice.

4I really like the C&C kits.

5How's late '70's Slingerland with black marine pearl finish grab you? I know a guy who kinda wants to sell his. He has several other kits he likes better. Just drums. Four piece. Good sounding. Well cared for.
They're currently in my studio storage area taking up space (in Bridgeport). I'll ask him what up if you want...

This is very interesting to me. I'll PM for details!
Keep it coming! Also, curious about snare loves and hates.

That's like 7 bucks in real money (e.g. the only currency that counts: ours).
What a deal!
I mean, you have to get *something* for living in a communist country, right? Government subsidized drums!

9Call Rusty at Rockhaus, he has a killer variety of reasonably priced U.S. and import drum kits. It's worth the drive.

10Why don't you hook up what this guy has going.
If you're lucky, you can get a frightened white girl to watch you.
