It seems to me that while Slint got all the attention during the "math rock" explosion, Drive Like Jehu was making better music. Just my opinion.
Not Crap

2I could've sworn we covered this already but that might have just been in the Hot Snakes thread.

3So the math explosion only began in 1991?
What Would Prog Rock Say?
Heh heh, OK fine, we're talking about the umpteemth wave of tempo-changing rock music here. Still though, I don't see how "mathy" Slint were. Sure there were the odd shifts here and there, but for the most part, as least on Spiderland, each song had a pretty consistent tempo. You could say the same of the first Jehu album on that matter as well. They're both great records, but I don't consider them "math rock" albums really.
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282's Lovelyville on the other hand..
Trumans Water's Of Thick Tum on the other hand
Nomeansno's 0 + 2 = 1, on the other hand (although they were "mathy" since the mid 80s.. then again, the Wrights were trained as kids to be jazz musicians.)
Should we all blame Rush?
(Actually, I don't consider the any of the above to be "math rock", as much as just each a great album with said elements. When you see a band play live and see the drummer count to a high prime number, then I think the term is strictly applicable (i.e. Godzik Pink in their earlier days))

4Why do you think I put math-rock in quotation marks?
Pre-Natal Pretties Northeast Regional Champ 1988
Band: Drive Like Jehu
5Because it was really late at night and wasn't really thinking, or seeing the quotation marks. Sorry.

7Can't believe this is even up for debate. "Yank Crime" was life-changing.

9A pity Rick didn't do anything else in the last ten years. He once sent me a home made Christmas card with a deer on it...how kind!
