Re: Guilty pleasures: bands you aren't supposed to like but like anyway

Went on a Duran Duran binge the other day. First album S/T and Rio both very good, all the way through. After that, complete crap. It's like they never quite found their sound, just ripped off everyone else's. The Chauffer owes a LOT to Japan's The Nightporter.

And yeah, don't really believe in guilty pleasures either. We like what we like, like Loverboy, Billy Squier.

Been Caught Stealing is one of my least favourite songs. They inspire a similar kind of nausea in me that Red Hot Chili Peppers do.

Even the singing works in this song. I think I like it also because it reminds me of a song by Melt Banana. And one by Refused, probably.
I don't hate to admit it, but I love Jane's Addiction. No guilt, all pleasure.
Might even catch me listening to select albums by the other band you mentioned. :?
DIY and die anyway.

Disengage the Simulator is one of my favourite rock songs.
They had a weird metal riffs and country beat thing that nobody else has been able to replicate. Like The Buckaroos on King Crimsons backline. Those guitar tones are just butt nasty.

I am suprised and confounded by the fact that I am increasingly fascinated by singing voices in their own right. Like I just pick out the singing and am like "oh, that's sounds really good", even if the song doesn't do it for me. Never happened before, ever.

Maybe ten years from now I will be defending radio dreck and [national] Idol by going "Yeah I don't care for the music... but they can SING!". Horrible thought.
