Cake is one of those things that is always there, at birthdays, weddings and other parties. To me, it gets old fast, and there is always left over cake that gets shoved off to people, because the host of the party doesnt want it. Sure, its good once in a while, but I have never seen pie left over after a party. Theres so many fillings you can use and its always good, unless theres a particular filling in it that you dont like. Pie takes the cake hands down

tough call. apple pie, cherry pie, these are good. lemon cream pie is great. not lemon merangue, that's disgusting. but that's about it for pies for me. cake, there's so many cakes that are good. i will only think about two of the finer ones: yellow cake, chocolate frosting, which i think it just great, and then white cake with raspberry goo in the middle, with buttercream frosting... mmmmm... yeah, lemon cream pie is the bomb in a "every year or two" kinda way, but if we're talking about something that can be consumed with any kinda regularity in any kinda volume, i'm gonna hafta pick cake. even though lemon cream pie is probably better than any cake. in small quantity, and infrequently.

I'm with you LAD. Especially on the gooseberry pie mention. My wife makes a mean pie. Last year we planted gooseberry and red currant bushes in our backyard. The resultant pies she has made are fantastic. Especially when the gooseberries and currants are combined in a single pie. We also have rhubarb planted that hopefully will be mature enough for pie-usage by next year. Same goes for the small elderberry tree we planted this summer.

Also, this fall, she made a bunch of green (unripe red) tomato pies. The recipe also uses golden raisins and candied ginger. Makes for an excellent pie with a wonderful texture.
