Sure some of their eras suck but the good stuff is just too good.

Incredible band that was good through a number of lineup changes. The early stuff with Nick Simper and Rod Evans is better than I remembered. Book of Taliesyn is fucking rad. Super psychedelic and hard. Every one of the MKII albums is excellent. I'll be damned if Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale don't rip on Burn. I was such a big MKII fan that I didn't want to like that album, but it's too great to ignore. Come Taste The Band is where I bow out (horrible, just horrible title) but that's still a great run.

Not crap, but their catalog is erratic. Everything after the 1970s is definitely crap. Some of the early stuff doesn't work but The Book Of Taleisyn is a true psychedelic nugget. In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head and Made In Japan are all canon. Any collection of their A and B sides will be quite illuminating as well. Key track: the live Highway Star from Made In Japan.

Drummer Ian Paice was faster and more precise than the majority of his peers, while Ian Gillan did the ballcrusher shriek better than anyone. Richie Blackmore was good but overrated.

Let's not forget Gillan's turn as Jesus Christ Superstar or Captain Beyond, the '70s supergroup featuring original Purple vocalist Rod Evans.

I thought they were really badass when my dad played them for me as a kid.
But I have to say, I fucking hate rock organ. What on earth inspired this trend of hard rock meets baseball game?

I was gonna say.. the distorted organ is the best part of the band!

Don't get me wrong, it's got its place. I like it just fine on a Wilco or Elliott Smith track.
But I really can't stand the hard rocking Hammond trend that stemmed from shit like Magic Carpet Ride or I'm a Man or Gimme Some Lovin'.
