Not Crap. Zero Waffles. The best Amphetamine Reptile band. Danger permeated every performance. Such a big fucking thrill being in the moment for those shows. Chaotic and indelible. Favorite record is Effete and Impudent Snobs. Gloriously bluesy, ugly, and noisy. Lost count to how many times I've swirled-out to "Preyed On" and laughed and danced to "Whitey in the Woodpile," their take on the old figure of speech/folk song "N-word in the Woodpile." Cows were confrontational and provocative without being edgelords. They were down. And hilarious. And scary. And sexy. Speaking of sexy Thor once called me the sexiest black guy in Chicago, and he was right. Speaking of Thor, he's on some really different trip now that deals with wellness and healing. All the power to you, T.

Favorite Cows story. I'm dancing at the front of the stage with a Cows shirt I'd just purchased wrapped around my neck. Someone threw a bottle which landed squarely on Shannon's forehead. He's bleeding profusely. I'm dancing. He takes the shirt from around my neck, uses it as bandage for the entire song, then throws it back at me. I'm a big Cows fan, but not that big. Go back to the merch table, explained the situation, and the merch person gives me another shirt. This had to have been 1995 or so. Just last year a friend of mine was commenting on Facebook about a Cows shirt he got for free after Shannon bled on it. Circle of life.

What a band. And if anyone has a recording of the original version of "Memorial" I've been dying to get a hold of it.

but yr wrong.
I tried, man. Tried hard. For a very long time I tried, and because of you I tried again with the Music For Insect Minds comp. To my ears it sounds dry and inert. Way back when I owned a copy of the Big Mod Hate Trip 7" and had the same concern. This music is not for me, but holy hell a handful of AmRep bands ruled my world for an era.

backatcha
