272There is a new Norm Macdonald special on netflix. Him in front of a computer with headphones on holding a microphone the night before going into surgery in case he didn't make it.
I have found his death very hard to accept to the point where i've just felt numb and disconnected. It's brutal and hard to watch. It's a lot of things but it doesn't feel like a stand up special. It's so poignant on first viewing it's hard to even take in that they are probably funny jokes he's doing.
It's very unique and i love Norm so much, and i know a lot of people on this forum did, so that's why I'm posting about it without fully taking it in or even comprehending it.

Nightcrawler, Netflix. One of Bill Paxton's last films, it seems, and Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic in it, Rene Russo, too. Good film all around.
Benedetta, another fucked up Verhoeven film. If you like him in general, you'll dig this one.

I will put Benedetta on my list of 'movies to watch while my wife is gone next week' list (Crimes of the Future and Jackass 4.5 are on there already).

277I just watched the Norm special and wanted to acknowledge your sentiments. I've been a fan more than thirty years. He was among the best to ever do stand up. I know he said things that ruffled feathers in his later years. I make no apologies for that. I just appreciate the work, and this was a powerful and unique final performance. 278We’re 3/4th through the latest David Simon series, We Own This City, which is about a gun-trace police task force in Baltimore that operated like a gang.
First episode wasn’t great. The writing was far too expository. It gets quite a lot better after that.
My hot take is that David Simon’s two biggest talents are (1) finding great subjects and marshaling them through the production process, and (2) hiring people who can write better than David Simon. He’s not terrible, but he’s consistently the weakest writer on the team for any given show.

Interesting take on Simon, and I don't entirely disagree with you, but his book Homicide is excellent.

280Oh, Homicide is great. But for scripted shows, he’s fine, but the writers he hires are often even better.
