It looks like the door panel is going to have to be removed to replace it. I'm wondering if I should try to do this myself, or get a mechanic to do it. I'm afraid I'll fuck it up.
I might be able to help advise. What is the make and model, for one. And most importantly, is the door panel itself all one solid piece all the way up to the space behind where the mirror attaches, or is there a small gap where another trim piece is behind the mirror area. If it is the latter, that piece can be removed easily and there are probably three nuts either 8 or 10 mm holding the mirror. If it is a power mirror, there will be a quick disconnect that is hopefully not buried in the door panel. Pics would help if this doesn't make sense.

The door panel is one solid piece, there's no small separate trim piece that can be removed behind the mirror unfortunately.
If that is the case, I would probably take it to a shop. There are lots of hidden screws and clips in door panels, it's easy to break stuff trying to pull them off. I have to do it occasionally for my job, but I prefer not to. But if you a fairly handy, you can look up on Youtube and see if anyone has uploaded a vid for your make/model for door panel removal.

Thanks for the advice. I've watched a few Youtube demos of other makes/models. I'm handy to a certain extent (can fix a toilet, replace a garbage disposal) but not that skilled.
"Whatever happened to that album?"
"I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall and it like, shattered."
