Descendents got big over time but were on New Alliance til '87 I think. I don't think they were seen as peers to those others at the time but maybe that's wrong.

24I often see people say this but while the first EP is awesome, there's no doubt to me that "Surviving you always" is their shining moment and where they really came into their own. Meanwhile, I can see people finding "We became snakes" too "fake-jazz"and too far removed from punk/rock but I love that album too. Btw, the first Universal Congress of album ( Joe Baizas post-ST project) is absolutely killer instro-stuff as well but again, maybe too far into free improv/jam/jazz-rock territory to have much general appeal even amongst SST dorks...

Not too many other bands sort of had their own place outside of genre/scene in the way that The Descendents did.

I was never a fan of Mazzy Star nor Rain Parade (although the covers LP David Roback put together under the name Rainy Day was pretty interesting) but there's something about Happy Nightmare Baby that's hard to pin down and fascinating and unique. Wish they'd kept it together a little longer. After Roback's death plans for the reissue fell apart and I had to cough up 65 bucks to replace my long-gone original pressing.
Tar Babies. I lived in Chicago during kind of a lull in the rock scene (1986-1990) and Tar Babies were one of the few local-ish bands that really blew me away live (they're from Madison, I know).
Bad Brains - I Against I. Not as essential as their early stuff but still great.
Man, SST reigned supreme during my formative years. I opened the door just a crack and everything came flooding through: Husker Du, Minutemen, Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur jr, Meat Puppets etc. It all changed my life and it all still sounds great. Thank Dog I found SST and not hair metal.

All of this. I went from hair metal to SST. SST ruled my world from the summer between 7th and 8th grade through like Senior year of high school (1985-1990).
For the record, Descendents were a huge band for SST at the time. ALL (the record, before they changed their name) sold a lot of records for them in real time right when it came out. That Liveage record too.

28Right, by '87-'88. That Somery disc was my intro to the band and maybe the 2nd thing I bought from the label after The First Four Years. I was also being cheeky with the 'Big Four' thing as I've only ever heard that term applied to the major '80s thrash bands though it kinda works..

29Oh yeah, Descendents of course. The ALL LP was my go-to record for heartache and relationship problems.
