Some people make a little foam donut to go under the knob. Might only work on strat-type knobs though, where there's a recess for the donut to fit.

I kid. What Nate said. Friction is friction. If it isn’t strat style, you might try using some squishy/soft/thin material with double stick tape. Or that picture hanging foam type material 3M stuff if double stick isn’t working. Cut it in a circle slightly smaller than your knob, stick it to the pickguard/body, get your knob all the way making contact with the circle, tighten the set screw.

This is very true. Ages ago I bought some Bourns pots for an amp and they were all crazy slippy slidey low friction. CTS by comparison are much more palatable to me.

Deoxit Fader Grease can also be used to damp the physical response of pots. Just squirt it in through the opening.

I keep the “fader” knob on a Neve style preamp at halfway at all times for all things. I don’t really know why, I just started doing it once and liked it and never stopped. I just like things to sound like old records without getting into ridiculous garage rock revivalist territory… I’m generally never compressing anything that hard for color. But this is a mic preamp, so of course the effect is relatively subtle. We are not in fuzzbox territory here. And Glyn Johns likes to do that on drums!
Should I not be doing that with the preamp? Just wondering if its one of those stupid habits that will bite me in the ass later at mastering or something.
