Mid-week update: Got a lot of the assembly finished. Just gonna stop by the shop to grab a barrel style jack and the hardware store for a few more short screws.

And just had the greatest windfall of all time. Dude on CL had 1 large (50x24) and one small (24 x 26) plate of .625" 6061 T6 aluminum. I got them for about the price I would have paid for 2 billets- but should be enough for 5 neck-thru builds and 4-5 bolt on necks.

will let you know how that all comes along.

Wrapped up #1.1. ended up at 8lbs, super comfy with some deep 70's arm and belly cuts. Alnico 7.8 and 8.5k pickups. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but the patriot shape will always be a favorite for me.

Time to start on #3, which will likely be a double-cut tele, just cause.

Wow. That's quite the thing, Chris. Great work, sir.

How much does it weigh with everything on?
8lbs 1oz

Weekly update- I got a good start on #3. I think things move more quickly with a little experience.
-body is the same birch/walnut with poplar back- double cut tele sort of look. got it glued up and rough cut
-templates: trying to spend more time setting myself up for some repeatability. Cut to rough shape, use templates and pattern following bits to get to a clean final shape.
-neck is rough cut. working with a 1/2" billet- the thinnest so far. Even with a 5/8, the last one had a baseball bat profile- hoping this will be more '70s fender' size.

Oh- and this will likely be the last Walnut/Birch body for a while- I burned through all my stockpiled walnut. Wood prices have gone through the roof, but I got a great deal on some cherry, so we'll see how that works out moving forward.

Since everything vibrating is really contained in the neck/bridge block, isnt the functionality of the wood largely superfluous? Obviously it looks nice, but i'd think you could make a perfectly reasonable body out of baltic birch or some other void-free plywood given the kinda neck-through setup.

Yes, indeed the receiver (I only call it that because other builder do) could essentially mount to a frying pan and the tone would be unaffected. The function of the body unit comes from the ergonomics it imparts, eliminating neck dive, spreading weight, eliminating sharp angles that don't fit the contours of actual humans, placement of controls. I actually think some stacked and carved baltic could look sharp. I'd want to do some chambering and such.
