I take issue with the question. Much more important than either was 70's US Punk because it gave rise to both.

It is against the rules to take issue with the question. The question is all we have. Without the question, we. are. nothing.

All hail the question.

Also, the Ctrl-S description is what I had in mind, but the drift is not upsetting.

All right, I tried to pair bands that had at least some common denominator. I realize the outcome might have been different with different pairings--Die Kreuzen would've won against anybody but The Birthday Party--but something must be said for having gotten there first. Still, some of these bouts were maddeningly close,

I ran out of British punk bands long before I did US hardcore bands, having been involved in the latter era and having a more comprehensive knowledge of its bands. I realize that there are plenty of British punk bands I've never heard, so feel free to append any additional pairings and keep the tally running.

999 vs. Circle Jerks: Yanks win, 1-0

The Adverts vs. The Dicks: Yanks win, 2-0

The Birthday Party vs. Die Kreuzen: Brits win, 2-1

Boomtown Rats vs. Adolescents: Yanks win, 3-1

Buzzcocks vs. Husker Du: Brits win, 3-2

The Clash vs. Articles of Faith: Brits win, 3-3

The Damned vs. Angry Samoans: Brits win, 3-4

The Fall vs. Void: Yanks win, 4-4

Gang of Four vs. The Proletariat: Brits win, 4-5

Generation X vs. The Germs: Yanks win, 5-5

Alternative TV vs. Saccharine Trust: Yanks win, 6-5

Magazine vs. Mission of Burma: Yanks win, 7-5

The Only Ones vs. Bad Religion: Brits win, 7-6

The Pop Group vs. Minutemen: Yanks win, 8-6

Tom Robinson Band vs. Squirrel Bait: Yanks win, 9-6

The Saints vs. The Effigies: Brits win, 9-7

Sex Pistols vs. Bad Brains: Yanks win, 10-7

Sham 69 vs. Fear: Brits win, 10-8

Siouxsie & The Banshees vs. Legal Weapon: Brits win, 10-9

The Slits vs. Meat Puppets: Yanks win, 11-9

The Soft Boys vs. MDC: Brits win, 11-10

Stiff Little Fingers vs. Dead Kennedys: Brits win, 11-11

The Stranglers vs. Black Flag: Yanks win, 12-11

Subway Sect vs. Negative Approach: Yanks win, 13-11

UK Subs vs. DOA: Yanks win, 14-11

The Undertones vs. SS Decontrol: Brits win, 14-12

Wire vs. Minor Threat: Brits win, 14-13

X-Ray Spex vs. 45 Grave: Brits win, 14-14

And there you have it, folks: a tie! Of course, if I'd scared up a couple of British bands to pit against Malignant Growth and Fading Out, it would've tipped it in the USA's favor, but in the interests of international relations, I figured I'd disqualify my own bands.

British punk and American hardcore: both so good!!

I disagree with so many of those "analogies" that I cannot believe this person has listened to said bands in any amount.

Unless it's a sort of a joke or something.

I've seen most of the bands on the list, I think.

Phil Galanter, you're not wrong, but that isn't what's being asked.

Two songs:

Borstal Breakout - Sham 69

Perfect Day - The Saints
