I like this, and I'm going to run with it. Primus were the bridge, for me at least from mersh "alternative" rock like Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails to more indie and avant-garde (well, for a teenager anyway) stuff like Fugazi, or the Melvins, or Sonic Youth.

Now that I've crossed that bridge, do I really need to go back over it?

I really enjoyed the hell out of Primus when I was 11-14, but since then? Nah. It was good for kicks, but limited staying power. "Sailing The Seas Of Cheese," probably has aged a little better than "Pretty Hate Machine," but I still haven't listened to Primus in seven or eight years. I still love "Repeater," "Houdini," and "Dirty." and there probably isn't a month that goes by that I listen to those records.

CRAP with its place, but still CRAP.
Police Teeth: we like Void so much, we decided not to sound like them.

Crap.

But here's my waffle factor: The drums on The Brown Album sound pretty cool.

But that can't save this dying horse.

I'm pretty sure that the same drummer from that album played on some Godflesh stuff at one point (I'm thinkin' Songs of Love and Hate, probably). This would perhaps be a waffle factor for another band, but not for Primus.

I enjoy listening to some Primus, but most of thier output is pure shit. Frizzle Fry and Brown Album kick ass, but the rest of their discography should never have seen the light of day. Still, I'll have to say Not Crap in defense of these 2 albums.

For the same reason I don't "actively" listen to hip hop (I can enjoy it as background filler):

I listen to music that makes me want to create music. Primus never makes me say, "Wow! I wanna do something like that."

It just doesn't resonate with me.

Kinda crappy, I suppose. There's also a hippy element that just rubs me wrong. The same reason that Ween's popularity is dipping in the poll in my head.

I don't listen to them anymore, but I loved the first few discs and their "Videoplasty" video is immensely entertaining. Plus, in their heyday, they were a phenomenal live band.

It's true that the music ages poorly, but they brought me quite a lot of musical pleasure in the day.

So I say NOT CRAP but with plenty of syrup.

Briefly knocked into Not Crap territory until someone else negates it.

I think a number of their songs are really great without going over the top on the "we're weird/funny!" angle and actually being interesting anecdotes/musical pieces. There's a lot of garbage and cheekiness that I might've put up with more when I was younger that I can't stand now, but overall I think their output has been about in line with the result of this poll, with the strongest moments barely outshining the weakest.
