There Is Nothing Left to Lose and The Colour & the Shape are big dumb rock albums but they are big dumb rock albums that I cannot resist.

I like the ridiculous Frampton vocoder thing on "Generator." I even like the overwrought "February Stars." And "Stacked Actors" needs no excuse for its existence: it rocks undeniably. And "Everlong?" Jesus Christ. How did they write such a perfect song?

I even like Grohl's vocals. I dunno why. They're nothing special, but I like how they "red-line" pretty quick. I guess I am saying that I enjoy his lack of vocal talent and limited range.

Loud and fun. Sorry.

...

Brad likes a-ha.

NOT CRAP :WF:9 for reminding me of a less-interesting version of Cheap Trick

This always makes me laugh:

A friend of mine, 2 years my junior, (he was probably about 15 when the first Foo Fighters record came out) tells of the time he watched the Foo Fighter's debut on David Letterman. He remembers thinking, "this sucks, this doesn't sound like Nirvana at all."

That first album, strangely enough, had a handful of FANTASTIC, complex, and catchy rock songs on it, but I can't believe how horrible that song of theirs is that goes "On and on I've been lookin' for somethin'...", just two chords over and over.

And Dave Grohl looks like an ape with that goatee.

This latest album is pretty lame. One by One was fucking awful. The rest of their stuff is very good pop-rock. No, it's not intellectual or groundbreaking, but they're very good rock songs.

I just learnt the other day that not only was the bass player in Sunny Day Real Estate, who I have not heard, but was before that in CHRIST ON A CRUTCH, a fucking excellent punk rock band who played in a house I used to live in in Middlesbrough once and with whom I conversed about the necessity to have a job in America, which to me was a novel concept at the time. Christ on a Crutch were to play an all dayer at Teesside Poly but time over-ran, so they set up and played (without vocals) at the house I used to live in, and were really really great. So I will hold a candle for that fella Nate Mendel, regardless of what goes on after that night I met him, cos life's like that.

My 1st exposure to them was the "How I Miss You" B-side, which I thought was awesome. I remember hearing it for the 1st time on the same night that I heard Bjork for the 1st time. I later bought their 1st record and listened to it several times through while trying to wrap my 14 year old head around Dante's Divine Comedy alone in my room for 3 days. The following year I bought The Colour and the Shape, and on the first listen (on my Mom's car stereo) exclaimed "Why the fuck is Dave Grohl making make-out music!?" to which my Mom laughed, nearly wrecking the car on I-475. Since that point, I refuse to buy anything with the Foo Fighters tag, but I'll still let them stay on the radio when they come on, and if I'm at the dentist's or something, I'll read the Dave Grohl interview in People or whatever...
I hate to actually say this, but: Their early stuff was way better.
