US hardcore. If it was british post-punk vs american 70´s punk, then it´d be a contest. And british 80´s hardcore loses in all scenarios IMO.

I'd have to take 70's Brit Punk. That movement was an outward one spawning off lots of different sub-movements and variations. It touched lots of people.

80's US Hardcore was an inward movement of purification and orthodoxy...*very* important to those there, but essentially nonexistent to those not.

This is utter madness. The Bad Brains are indeed one of the greatest hardcore bands--top 5, easily--but they made one excellent album, a couple of decent ones, and a bunch of crap (remember the non-H.R. years?). They played Louisville in their heyday, opening with 5 fast songs (maybe ten minutes of blistering music) before opting to play over an an hour of unabated half-baked reggae. Everyone in attendance was appalled.

If The Birthday Party recorded a single bad song, I have not heard it. They are, after The Stooges, the second greatest rock band of all time.
