I've heard other bands doing this kind of thing, and those bands are perhaps more interesting. Milieu has a lot to do with it.
I think I can say that "I just dont care for the Decemberists take on that kind of music"

...to the Parallel Universe of late 90's to 00's "Sensitive Indie Pop" bands
Belle and Sebastian>Death Cab>Prom>Decemberists.)
Therefore, the argument could be made that the Decemberists have as much validity to the world of Indie Pop as Creed does to Grunge.
Validity, originality and visceral appeal aside, I don't dig them much.
