I've heard other bands doing this kind of thing, and those bands are perhaps more interesting. Milieu has a lot to do with it.

Therefore, the argument could be made that the Decemberists have as much validity to the world of Indie Pop as Creed does to Grunge.

Validity, originality and visceral appeal aside, I don't dig them much.

I don't get the appeal. Way too precious for me, and I like plenty of Indie Pop bands - Belle & Sebastian, Shins, Beulah, etc.

Everytime I hear them, my internal music-o-meter gives them a solid "whatever..."

I can see this band being the toast of their hometown, or even their region, but how they've acheived international acclaim, I have no idea.

Best of luck to them. I don't get the impression that they did anything other than show up to their gigs and play their songs in order to get famous, so I can't fault them for that. I guess the world is just filled with more Lisa Loeb looking girls, who carry lunchboxes as purses, and fey boys with backwards haricuts, who wear stripey shirts, than I previously thought.

The problem is, they've got a shtick. When the songs are in charge (Myla Goldberg) they're not half bad, but when shtick takes over they get precious and obnoxious.

I can see how a band like this can get popular. They are definitely marketable in that whole "Oh look, an odd, intelligent indie band, we'll put them on the O.C" type of way. Even though their music isn't odd, and is not at all as intelligent as their supporters would have you believe. It's really easy to swallow, harmless,twee pop music.

Oddly the vocals in this band don't bother me near as much as the music, which I know I have heard before. I mean if I wanted something that was as corny as what the Decemberists do I would just toss on a Kicking Giant record, I mean, at least they somewhat rocked.

The new album, The Crane Wife is unfortunately CRAP.

I really don't like this band, but this video is not only a decent Rushmore pastiche, but you also get to see Chris Walla with a moustache.

Four albums and still complete crap.
