Band: Interpol

There was a day, some years ago, when I thought interpol were a good band.

Then I listened to more Joy Division, and heard some Bauhaus.

So now whenever I hear this band, I only hear some guys ripping off Bauhaus ripping off Joy Division. And that's just one thread of ripoff that's going on.

Some of the songs on that Bright Lights album have their moments. Everything else I've heard is 100% crap, which makes this band about 97% crap in my book, which is a LOT of

CRAP!

Any band that thinks about it's fashion as much, if not more, than it's music is ultimately CRAP to me. Regardless of whether or not they are ripping off Joy Division or the Psychedelic Furs or A-Ha, their songs still all sound the same, same basic formula for the fast songs, same basic formula for the slow songs.

Same basic CRAP.

I used to like them. But I had to kill them.

I agree with mr oucheh. That said, this band does has a fairly good penchant for songwriting. They should work on the songs instead of prioritizing their tinny 80s retro sound and their skinny ties.

crap, with a good deal of waffling

I have to say, Andy is very good at predicting the weather. Better than most meteorologists, actually. Over a week ago, he said he was 99.9% sure that our wednesday baseball game would be cancelled. I was skeptical, but as of Wednesday he turned out to be 100% correct.

But if he makes a prediction that Interpol's next record will possess any artful depth or musical ingenuity, he will have a 99.9% chance of being dead wrong.

Ok.

1. This whole 'thinks about it's fashion as much, if not more, than it's music' thing. They wear snappy suits. How long does that take to 'think about'? Oxes wear snappy suits sometimes too.

Listen to the rhythm section of Interpol and tell me that they spend more time on their suits than the music.

2. What is this formula? I mean sure, they use the same guitar sounds for most tracks, but then so do most bands. I've listened to Interpol plenty and I don't hear anything more formulaic than, say Melvins. Or Husker Du.

I remember being in a record store sometime in 2002, with Turn On the Bright Lights playing in the background. My reaction was not "Who is this?", rather "What does this remind me of?"
A compact package, I guess, if you like to treat music as some sort of "consumer product". I never heard anything in Interpol's music that would warrant all the excitement about them.

Ok.

1. The fashion part is still inextricably linked to the music thanks to the band and how THEY choose to promote themselves. It adds an extra level of pretention that's not necessary if they actually wrote worthwile music. Their rhythm section sounds like every other band right now that's aping well tread retro territory. Also, I couldn't give a shit about the Oxes.

2. As for formula, you can play both albums side by side and they sound the same, are sequenced the same, etc. Both Husker Du & The Melvins were/are intelligent & creative enough to toss a couple curveballs up there and vary their sound. Comparing Interpol to those band is like, in the immortal words of Frank Vincent, comparing apples to bowling balls.
