As far as measures to improve traffic flow go… I do not mind roundabouts, but am more impressed with how much diverging diamond interchanges improve things. The Chicago area has a few of these and they do not suck.

593Imagine a normal road, but instead of the traffic in the other lane going by you like normal, you have to stop at a stop light and wait for them to cross. Then stop at another light and wait for them to cross again so you can go back to the right side. They're excellent for exactly one thing: situations where nobody goes straight and everyone turns left. If you want to go straight, plan on waiting a good long time.losthighway wrote: Sun Aug 21, 2022 10:10 pmI think I'd need to drive on one of those to understand it properly.jfv wrote: Sun Aug 21, 2022 9:17 pm As far as measures to improve traffic flow go… I do not mind roundabouts, but am more impressed with how much diverging diamond interchanges improve things. I think every diverging diamond should require a 3/4ths majority in both houses and a governor's signature to install. If you can't convince the legislature to sign a law, then it's not that important to install a diverging diamond.

Re: What are you thinking right this second?
595Actually, it benefits those exiting the freeway and turning right the most. They have no traffic signal ahead of them and flow freely onto the other road, assuming there is a merge lane. If there were no merge lanes in this kind of interchange, it would render most of its benefits moot as you'd then have to have a longer stoplight cycle that includes right- and left- protected turns.ErickC wrote: Sun Aug 21, 2022 10:15 pmImagine a normal road, but instead of the traffic in the other lane going by you like normal, you have to stop at a stop light and wait for them to cross. This kind of interchange doesn't always make sense to build, e.g. rural roads with little traffic, but in the places where I've seen them added (i.e. busy suburban interchanges, replacing old interchanges that needed to be rebuilt anyway), I feel like they do improve things.

I honestly thought that they were putting me on. Sounded like something that Bruce had Lucius Fox throw together in The Dark Knight.
Turns out it is actually out there in the wild.

598Watched a Fox News clip of Karl Rove laying into Donald Trump for lying blatantly -- in this instance, about how all the National Archives had to do was ask him to return anything they wanted back -- and thought "This MF spittin'." What a world!

599My anecdotal evidence suggests that the majority of humans in a grocery store have an almost childlike ability to be obliviously and glacially in the fucking way. Basic intuition about how you and your cart occupy space in high traffic areas is a rare commodity. Classic stereotypes would pin this on the elderly but I've found it to be an ageless impairment.

600I would like to add that this applies to the grocery store parking lot as well.losthighway wrote: Sat Aug 27, 2022 2:02 pm My anecdotal evidence suggests that the majority of humans in a grocery store have an almost childlike ability to be obliviously and glacially in the fucking way.
