For me (I don't ride yet). scooters and motorcycles are pretty much the same thing...

I'm going to get one so I can get around the city and maybe get away upstate occasionally.

I'm looking to NOT have to buy a car and my aesthetic choice for the bike I buy has nothing to do with any group I might fit into because I don't even know what that would mean. I'm not buying it to show off or to be a part of some group.

Motorcycles = Good gas mileage, cool machines, cheap.

Not crap with the only WF being safety.

In this cartoon world of random pictures you present the two may be mutually exclusive. In my world of experience riding both they are not. I know plenty of people who ride both and own several versions of both. That means I know guys who might have a Vespa, a Lammy, a crotch rocket and a Harley. I've owned both types concurrently. I've gone to plenty of rallies with both represented.

If one just cares about fashion then I guess it could makes an irreconcilable difference. If one just cares about riding and simple machines then it makes no difference at all.

The road rules are the same, the riding techniques are the same, the legal definitions are the same and the joy of riding is the same. The only real differences are engine sizes.

are you guys in europe or something? the laws are not the same here in CA. Anyone can get and ride a scooter w/ a normal license.

the techniques are absolutely not the same. My ex girl could ride the scooter w/o any instructions. If I hopped on a motorcycle w/o any instructions , training needless to say that would not be advisable and also would be illegal.

OF COURSE some people ride both, but the cultures are night and day. You can not truly believe otherwise?

I don't hate motorcyclists at all. I just think the act of dressing up in bright colored leather, popping wheelies on a highway and putting "duccati" stickers on the back of a SUV is incredibly douchey and attention whoring. As is being in a "gang" that hangs out at the starbucks jerking each other off staring at crotch rockets :)

Some of you take it very seriously tho, as if getting a hobby called CRAP in a crap/not crap thread is some sort of unexpected and off topic slight.

50% of the people reading are calling it crap... yet the only issue is I think scooters are completely different?

You seem to have a very narrow-lumping scheme with All Motorcycle Riders having the same mentality.

Maybe in horrible, horrible California that may be true. I stay far away from there. I don't know.

Half the people here think motorcycles are loud and annoying?
That's just stupid. I don't ride loud bikes and neither do any of my motorcyle-riding friends. We are just as disdainful of Harley assholes and Donor-Bike jackasses. But we are not them.

If you can ride a scooter on the street without a cycle license in CA, that's just stupid too.

Still, you seem to have some weird deep-seated loathing of motorcycles.

Oh I hate motorcycles, but not those that ride them :) its like hating banana flavored candy... and its not really the noise as much as the Top Gun closet gay machismo culture surrounding it.

its a lot like skiing. The skiing culture is full of douchebaggy lemming attention whores. does that make all skiiers douchebags? Of course not but the culture is defined by tight pants neon sunglass wearing attention whores.

Similar for "bikes" you can absolutely NOT be an attention whore and be a hardcore biker... but the culture itself is absolutely defined and refined by the worlds original attention whores.

just like american football is defined by dumb jocks and gay ass slapping and war analogies. It doesnt mean they are ALL dumb... but you can understand that if someone said NFL football and Soccer were essentially the same thing.. there is no way.

I am not originally from CA btw, in Boston there are far less "bikers" due to weather, but the attention whoring behaviour observed is similar. The difference being the races. in norCA there are a lot more chinese and filipino bikers. In Boston, its more white and black. in SF there really arent that many blacks at all, and in Daly City we just started getting some recently. It was a huge culture shock for me just in terms of what i am used to seeing. In boston I was used to seeing mostly whites blacks and a few vietnamese and cape verde.. out here its mostly filipino and there is some law or something in SF that if you are black you have to live in a 5 block neighborhood unless you are in college... I'm pretty sure they dont allow blacks in towns like Marin unless they are wearing "fun" polo shirts and pleated khakis

Hexpane, you're appearing kind of trollish with all these wacky posts of yours. Now that I think about it, you remind me of a forum member named 'yut' who posted here a while ago, but that's neither here nor there. And that part at the end of your post where you start talking about blacks in SF and Marin - I'm not really sure where the hell you're going with that.

Some people ride motorcycles, and some of those people crave attention. Other people ride scooters, and some of those people crave attention. I know a few motorcyclists and scooter types here in Portland, and they are fine people. Not at all attention whores. I was born and raised in the bay area. There are, and always have been, lots of motorcyclists there.

End of story. Let it go, man.

Motorcycles: I've never ridden one, so I can't really vote c/nc. The Harley noise is beyond crap, however.

You can't vote in a crap/not crap thread because of that? is that in the rule book?

let what go? I have a diff opinion than another poster, I need to let go of that opinion because of a few side tangents? Im pretty new here but I thought the point of crap/not crap was a discussion w/ 2 diff opinions.. i.e. one agrees crap the other agrees not crap?

Not to mention the fact that I already agreed that of course not all bikers are attention whores, any sane person knows not all X are Y.. that doesnt suddenly negate stereotypes or decades old cultural phenoms.

Seriously, its a fucking crap/not crap thread... anyone getting offended in a crap not crap thread needs to re-think why they are reading it.

The entire point of crap not crap is to vote and debate. Its not trolling to pick a side.
