I feel like both get too much attention for being only slightly less the same as all the other pop that all sounds exactly the same. I guess I'm a little less bored hearing Eilish than Lorde, who is extremely boring. Eilish has kinda cool videos too, so 2 points for BE. NO points to Lorde. It is probably because I'm so surrounded by music that is really weird and expectation subverting that when I hear people gush about how "weird" and "creative" the BE record is I have a hard time hearing what they are talking about. For what it is worth, and I'm not really a fan of her music at all, I feel like FKA Twigs in a more interesting artist from any direction you look at it, so if I'm judging pop:

FKA Twigs.

Oh absolutely, but she's about as 'pop music' as Kate Bush.
Hangs out with rappers, so she seems pretty popular to me. Everything that has a drum machine and people dancing kinda hits me the same way.

Right.

Seems to me Eilish is gonna get spit out by the music/fashion/whatever media as soon as she can no longer be exploited. I'm not sure what anyone sees in her except that it's "music for girls." It's not edgy or threatening in the least, though people seem to think it is, the press certainly describes it as such. I get the feeling she's the music/media industry's current version of Alanis Morrissette. Her songs are boring.

Lorde is more universal in both her appeal musically, and wrt subject matter, and seems to me much less wrapped up in her own "identity." She is also way less marketable.

They were about the same age when they got popular. Pure Heroine came out when Lorde was 17 I think.

I think Billie Eilish makes much more interesting music, and I like her attitude. Though if I was a much younger man, I would probably want to make out with Lorde. She's got that smart arty girl thing going on that makes me sigh.
