Both of those Ancestors records are great. Haven't heard much beyond that but NC at all.

Voted NC based on Sons of Kemet, as it's all I'd heard of him before this. So STRONG NC. Interesting contemporary exploration of Spiritual Jazz, which seems to be happening across the globe. I'm loving this growing movement.

There’s a lot I need to check out too. I have the first Ancestors record, which is great, and a Makaya McRaven record that features Hutchings (and that I learned about on the PRF). I also have the comp that includes this killer:

Along those lines a friend just recommended this new album to me this weekend. I'm a sucker for Ethiopian influenced sax so I'm on board.

I went ahead and started a catch-all thread for this stuff. There may have been something similar before the board went down:

Really loved the last two Ancestors records. A lot.

In regards to Sons of Kemet I only know Your Queen....

I think they are great at what they do but it annoys me. I think they're great but never want to listen to them. They sound like The Ex with sheet music.

I bet they're great live.

I'm going to look into the newer album.

I get so much out of the Ancestors records and so little out of Sons of Kemet. It's weird.

I was able to give it a listen the other day and yeah.. the rhythm section is much more straight forward in a "get up and shake yr asses" way. I definitely prefer the Ancestors but it still had its moments.

As far as 'the Ex with sheet music' I really like those Ex albums with Getachew Mekurya, more than their regular albums honestly.
