Re: The Big Lebowski vs. Withnail and I

There was a period on the old PRF when everybody was talking about Withnail and I figured since this many people (whose opinions I trusted) liked it, I should take that, at the very least, as a recommendation. So I checked it out. I didn't like it. I kept waiting to like it but that moment didn't occur.

This was compounded by that every one of the few people I told this to took it upon themselves to explain to me why it's funny - nothing's funnier than an explained joke, after all - then insist I watch this movie again because when I said I didn't like it, they heard that I didn't get it and now I should watch it again with their notes in mind. That's not the movie's problem, that's just where my aversion comes from.

The worst part of Lebowski, on the other hand, is that I think white Russians are gross.

I've seen Lebowski once. I liked Flea and his Kraftwerk cohorts, but can't remember anything else about it and don't care if I never see it again.

Withnail and I.

I've never heard anyone lump these two together, but I lump Four Lions in with, um, Withnail, if only because I find both funny but whenever I try explaining why I have to resort to quoting bits and then saying 'Well, it's funny in the context of the film'.

Also recommended: Smoking in Bed, a book of interviews with Bruce Robinson

I actually watched this one yesterday, and am sad that I slept on it for so long.

Yes, Four Lions is very funny, and tragic.

Withnail & I is funny and tragic in a more relatable way (if you're not a jihadi) if you've ever seen anyone choose alcoholism over adulthood. (Did you know? Richard E Grant was completely teetotal and had got drunk only once in his life, as research for the film)

TBL is amusing and not tragic at all unless you care that Donny died, or particularly about what happens to anyone, which you probably don't.

Armando Iannuci's Death of Stalin was mentioned in the same conversation as Four Lions recently (Iannuci and Chris Morris are former collaborators) so if you missed that one and are in the mood for some more bleak British black comedy, Death of Stalin is funny and horrific.
