The book was very juicy. It's amazing they could continue the way they did despite how dysfunctional they were. They must have been making really good money. Narcissism, Codependency, Jealousy, Sabotage- Vince Gilligan's team couldn't have scripted something this outlandish. The Rich Robinson/Jimmy Page story is so unbelievably insane. I like this band, though mostly a singles band that kicked ass live. As Gorman put it "we were a great band, with good songs." I also like that he was a beginner drummer when the band started.
I love Chris Robinson's singing.

12Happy to revisit those first three albums whenever. NC.

Re: band: the Black Crowes
13This exactly nails this band for me. Minus the interest in the book. I've tried several times with different records and it is not for me.penningtron wrote: Wed Apr 05, 2023 6:47 am I think they are to the Rolling Stones what Stevie Ray Vaughan's Hendrix covers are to actual Hendrix: in other words no thanks. I am mildly interested in that book though.
Re: band: the Black Crowes
14I was literally yelling "are you fucking KIDDING ME?" out loud, repeatedly, while reading that bit. My wife was like are you ok?
You play guitar in a bluesy rock band, Jimmy Page asks if you wanna write some songs together for your next record and you say NO.
Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin.
Just think about that for a minute.
For as much of an insufferable dumbshit as Chris Robinson seems to be, that bit about Rich put him over the top. One of the dumbest moves in rock history. Who would say no to writing songs with Jimmy Fucking Page?
Anyway, Gorman's book is Not Crap. "Southern Harmony" is not crap, that record sounds awesome. Not my favorite sort of stuff, but the tunes are all solid, the playing's good, and again, the sonics are terrific. I dunno any of their other stuff besides the hits off the first record, which are meh.
Re: band: the Black Crowes
15I know right? Also, Chris' refusal to play Howard Stern's birthday party unless they were paid. Howard was constantly vocal about his love for the band, wore their shirts all the time on the air and had them on the show all of the time. You received the best free PR in the world at the time from Howard, and you couldn't do a set for Howard at what was probably a really great party.MoreSpaceEcho wrote: Wed Apr 05, 2023 9:21 amI was literally yelling "are you fucking KIDDING ME?" out loud, repeatedly, while reading that bit. Re: band: the Black Crowes
16I saw this band for free back in the day. Felt like Led Zeppelin for Dave Matthews fans. I'm not really familiar with their records.
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.

17Four Horsemen was awesome.M.H wrote: Wed Apr 05, 2023 5:19 am I like the first 3 albums just fine - a bit too much Faces in the mix for me to really love, but that's just my tastes - and they hold their own w/ Page in some of the footage of that collab I've seen ('Wanton Song' - fuck yeah!), which is not to be casually dismissed.
I will say I find it frustrating that it seems the bratty (though not full on psycho) behaviour that pushed them over the edge into a VH1 behind the music level career, I wouldn't have bet that they'd be the success story outta that very late 80s / early 90s retro rock scene w/ (IMO) superior competition like Cry of Love or Drivin and Cryin or the Four Horsemen. But that's how the dice fall.

Re: band: the Black Crowes
18Great band, even if for Southern Harmony and Musical Companion and Amorica alone.
The aforementioned book is a RIDE, man. Loved that, too.
