I like to use NI Guitar Rig for this... more for electronic drums than guitars actually. lots of good quality distortion & analogish sounding effects. Not really cheap ($300 for the no-pedal software version) but versatile.

I used to put a 10" subwoofer behind my seat when I had to drive accross the country. It sounded (felt) great, I think it's the best way to listen to music. It was aimed kind of at the lower back area. Just a small cabinet is good enough.
