I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the prog rock elephant in the room, malkmus' live show and a lot of the records are now laden with competent/awful prog noodling. I know pavement liked to jam, but the malkmus/grateful dead comparison gets more apt with age

saw them live back in May in Dublin. They were excellent, but I think they have a newish band with some borrowed players from lambchop which helps live for the old stuff but takes them down a strange road on the record.
