For what it's worth:

I built that exact same circuit (the one from sound.westhost.com), using 2134s. I didn't try comparing the 2134s with any other op-amps, but the phono amp sounded very good. I have a Hagerman Technology Oboe preamp, with which my home-made preamp competes admirably.

tuning is _so_ important, and yet so often overlooked. and it's hardest with toms, where you can't use muffling to compensate for bad tuning.

Beyer M201 or M88 or M160

i second all of the above --- you really can't go wrong with any of these microphones.

one thing: i don't think i'd want to make a habit of using the M160 (or any ribbon microphone) on snare. maybe for brush-work, or those `hot rods' thingys, but definitely not for general-purpose snare recording ...
