I can vouch for that, the W17 don't provide much popping-stopping(!?). More of an retro aesthetic add-on really. I bought some AKG W90 foam windshields which fit very well get the job done. They are still available.

As for the housing, DIY. Use anything that's metal and has holes in it. Two tea strainers back to back??! Two hifi speaker tweeter grills back to back? Some shit old mic that's broke... or you could buy an Opus ...
