ok, while we are on the subject, my 19a-9 is also having a problem where once it's warmed up, it makes a noise every 20 seconds like a cross between an expresso maker or a someone hocking a lougie or a tympani hit recorded backwards.

could this be a dried cap leaking dc into the signal path ...

after much anal-retentiveness, i finally tried installing a Dimarzio DP212 EJ pickup. excellent!!! all the biting treble i was looking for- plus an awesome low-mid thickness i was not expecting but got REALLY ...

i have 2 of these machines. we use them as primary mixdown decks at our studio. they are hell to align, but they have a real magic to them...
(and for a modern sound (i.e. free of hiss), you NEED to use NR with them.)

that being said, i don't think they would be worth buying to turn into preamps ...

pretty much 90% of the times where i need a close hihat mic, i use a m500. bright without being annoying, also takes EQ really well.
also extremely nice for recording rhodes piano through an amp.
also very flattering to "unseasoned" brass or string sections or soloists.
