Yeah, that sound "enhancer" is a misnomer.
The best way to use iTunes is to turn off the sound enhancer, crossfade playback, EQ, etc. Turn the volume on your computer all the way up, and the volume in iTunes all the way up. Adjust volume with your amp or mixer. I've found this to be the cleanest ...
