Arto Lindsay has used a twelve-string a lot. Look up DNA...although don't expect any kind of virtuoso guitar playing. Still, a unique approach.

Don't really know of many good twelve-string examples...besides Stairway to Heaven or some other cock rock bullshit.

I know this board is really big fans of seven-string guitars though.

The Byrds, "Eight Miles High" - one of the greatest and most unique guitar solos in rocque history. Rickenbacker 12-string? Ya Betcha as the minnesotans say. Actually, just look up a lot of early Byrds. That's a lot of gorgeous, incredibly beautiful electric 12-stringing.

The Byrds:
Everybody's Been Burned
Why
(the afore mentioned) Eight Miles High
Essentially, their entire catalog. McGuinn wrote the book on this instument. I suggest the 5D record.

The Smiths:
William It Was Really Nothing
Panic

The Church:
Most of their stuff, but the entire Heyday album is a great start.

Lilys:
Returns Every Morning
Bringing Up Stamp
The Night Sun Over San Juan

Beatles:
The famous opening chord of (and subsequent song) A Hard Day's Night
Ticket to Ride

Echo And The Bunnymen:
Killing Moon
Thorn of Crowns
Bedbugs and Ballyhoo

Tom Petty & The Heartbrakers:
The Waiting

REM:
So. Central Rain
Pretty Persuasion

The Searchers:
Needles and Pins (uh)

The Jam:
Just Who Is The 5 O'Clock Hero
Start

Beach Boys:
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Sloop John B.

Townsend used one in the early days to fatten up the Who's live sound. Also, on Tommy.

Most Lush songs feature 12 string because a lot of Cocteau Twins songs do as well.

Most Mission UK songs feature 12 string

For acoustic, Leadbelly and Leo Kotke are two of the most famous players.

That should get you started.

Robin Guthrie is also well known for his work with Lush, for whom he has produced four or five albums, including Spooky

That's all he played.
The electric 12 string came much later.

The guitarist in Gore used a 12 string at
points, as do the Champs (or, well.. they
have those weird guitars where only the
high strings have the octave).

I play the electric 12-string in my band
on probably 90% of our songs. I don't
know if the way I use it is very "typical",
though, since I don't do a whole bunch
of the Byrds-y arpeggiated type of stuff,
but instead play more chordally melodic
guitar parts and wall of noise stuff. I like
them, I think it's cool the way they almost
invert some chords, or highlight different
notes than a 6-string would. People always
ask me what tuning I'm playing in, and are
astounded when I say that it's all in standard.

In addition to everything mentioned above, the Wrens song "Ex-Girl Collection" has some excellent 12-stringing going on, two of 'em at once I believe.
