" Comedian" : Neil Hamburger

Maybe one joke in three is genuinely funny (why did Madonna feed her child alpo? She couldn't help it! that's just what came out of her breast) - though maybe not everyone's idea of funny; one in three is mildly funny, and one in three is not funny at all, just perplexing. But then, when people are looking perplexed, he says "please, people! I have cancer!" And to deal with a heckler, he finds someone else in the audience who has a drink, and someone with a lighter, and has them pour the drink on the heckler and light him/her on fire. Plus, he's continually clearing his throat through the microphone. Plus, there are long periods of awkward silence.

I guess it's in the delivery. But still, not crap!

Not crap. I love his work and have a ton of his CDs. Not many buy the whole: "It's funny because he's not funny -- how avant garde!" shtick. As a friend of mine said, "I'm not laughing because it's funny, I'm laughing at the idea that these are supposed to be jokes." I think you might need to have a love of terrible jokes in order to appreciate the whole deal, maybe?

"I went to see an aromatherapist, and she had bad breath!"

Not crap, though definitely a lot funnier when he performs with bands than when he tours on his own and everyone knows the deal. The Trans Am/Fucking Champs/Laddio Bolocko/Neil Hamburger show in Minneapolis a few years ago will forever be one of my favorite shows ever.

Lots of really subtle, funny shit on his records, and I like how he mixes it up (the "DiPresa's Pizza House" record last year has maybe 5 regular "jokes", the rest of it is a doc(mock?)umentary and is really funny, IMO).

I hope my band gets to share a bill with him someday.
