Rush is also to blame for the Dungeons and Dragons stigma that most "prog rock" gets.

Neil Peart wrote:The cities were abandoned
And the forests echoed song
They danced and lived as brothers
They knew love could not be wrong
Food and wine they had aplenty
And they slept beneath the stars
The people were contented
And the gods watched from afar
But the winter fell upon them
And it caught them unprepared
Bringing wolves and cold starvation
And the hearts of men despaired

Yeah... the cover of Roll the Bones should have had 20-sided dice, instead of the 6 sided ones. These guys are so D&D, it's not even funny (OK, it's a riot!!!)

HA! totally! We used to role-up new player characters while listening to Rush and Blue Oyster Cult.

"YYZ" proves the whiteness point, actually. This song features a rhythm derived from the morse code rendition of the letters YYZ, the FAA designation of Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport.

So white. So nerd. So music geek. So Canadian chauvinist. So utterly, utterly lame.

OK, a clarification, then: YYZ is as funky as Rush could ever hope to be, yet too far from whiteness for their comfort. But Rush, those clever Canuckers, tricked most of us, and good, by deriving the above's rhythm from morse code, almost nonpareil in whiteness and dorkiness. Almost: keep these dudezz away from ham radio!

Wrong....The intro drum beat to Tom Sawyer IS funky...and awesome....it was a popular breakbeat to sample back in the day with early rappers, who tend to just like the beats they like, without any of the cultural baggage with which rock fans approach rock groups, or Rush.

Also, Steve is right....Peart is right wing, and comes off borderline facist on this old interview that they have archived at rocksbackpages.com....I don't know if it's accessible if you don't pay, though...

Ok not exactly liberal... but not right-wing...

"Rush -- Astronomicon"
[ Taken from Seconds -- Issue 25, 1994 ]

P: People should do what they want and not hurt me. Left-wing libertarian is what I call myself, because I do believe in the safety-net aspect of society.

and

...Over the years, Peart has made fewer direct references to Rand, and he admits that one cause of the decline has been the intense hostility such sentiments have evoked among rock critics, especially in Britian:

"There was a remarkable backlash, especially from the English press -- this being the late seventies, when collectivism was still in style, especially among journalists. They were calling us "junior fascists" and "Hitler lovers." It was a total shock to me. "

this article seems to explain his politics clearly and also quotes quite a few Rush lyrics:

You are right on the money. It explains his politics in this sentence:

Peart, a thoughtful, self-educated man, was introduced to Objectivism by reading The Fountainhead while a teenager.

This site is also full of other, less pithy sentences that have brought smile after smile to my face. Thank you, TheMilford.

I'm glad I could amuse, but the price of admission will be a another Haiku...

A boy alone, and so far from home
Endless rooftops from my window
I felt the gloom of empty rooms
On rainy afternoons

Sometimes, in confusion
I felt so lost and disillusioned
Innocence gave me confidence
To go up against reality

All the same
We take our chances
Laughed at by time
Tricked by circumstances
Plus ça change
Plus c'est la même chose
The more that things change
The more they stay the same

Now i've gained some understanding
Of the only world that we see
Things that i once dreamed of
Have become reality

These walls that still surround me
Still contain the same old me
Just one more who's searching for
A world that ought to be

Certainly.

It's lonely in the city
crappy pad, no friends
wish I had a diploma

Excellent! Ha!

You know, Neil was once a tractor salesman... Don't need no stinking diploma for that.

anyway, here's a contrast... check out some of Geddy Lee's lyrics:

I've got a livin' that's rough, a future that's tough
You know what i mean
Blankers and boasters, all the bluffers and posers
I'm not into that scene

You can tell me that i got no class
Look around, you'll see who's laughin' last
Don't give me speeches 'cause they're oh so droll
Leave me alone, let me rock and roll

Got an itchin' to rock, a hate for small talk
I'm funny that way
Got my sights on the stars, won't get that far
But i'll try anyway
I just like to please, don't like to tease
I'm easy like that
Don't like long rests, i must confess
I'm an impatient cat

I do the best that i can
I'm just what i am
I do the best i can
Well, i know what i am

Rock and rollin's a scream, makin' millions my dream
Well, i do that a lot
I'll just give it a try, won't let good times pass me by
They're all i've got
