So you drive your amp really hard?

hot pickups with the volume up into an amp that's waiting to clang or bark makes a way better sound, for my money, than any stompbox.

except okay wait, i suppose i love the sound of the Z.Vex Super Hard-on for bass more than just bass->amp... bass->SHO->amp is a beautiful thing. but i don't count it as "distortion" so much as just gain or bias or something. it can be set where picking softly results in a sound that's barely-if-at-all distorted, but if you wail on it, it barks.

picking a bass very hard and consistently may be as underrated as hitting the snare squarely. maybe even moreso.

i don't have any of my distortion pedals with my bass...so i guess when i play the bass i don't use it...it'd be nice every now and then i guess...though i do have an EH Bass Microsynth and that has distortion on it...so should i ever feel the need i'd have that...though so far i mostly use it for the filter sweeps...not that i use it too often...i have 2 distortion pedals with my non-bass guitar(s)...Big Muff (primary) and a (ahem) You Dirty Ratt... i have a regular non-bass EH microsynth with that too...of course if i'm doing the filter sweeps i'll have some of the "square wave" (i.e. distortion) thrown in...but for plain ol' distortion it's the plain ol' distortion pedals i use...i like pedals a lot...i have several guitars, but my more fancy pedals are worth more than each of them...that probably says something about my performance aesthetic...

Yea, I guess I should have posted to this thread when it was active. I have been influenced by the bass player in my last band. Who had a rather simple set up.

1969 Black Fender Jazz Bass > XXL 1 > XXL 2 > XXL 3 > Korg Bass Synth > SWR Amp (Signal split direct d.i. to p.a.) Line out SVT Right Ampeg 10 x 10 cab slave SVT Left Ampeg 10 x 10 cab.

He had a lot of presence and the distortion was nice. I now use 2 XXL’s as part of my present set up but that would be a post after I put my rather lengthy classic set up.
