Band: Smiths, The
41They’re one of those bands that I’d never listen to unless someone else has already put them on. Overall CRAP.

The smiths are very not crap.

I always felt that Andy Rourke was the finest musician in a band of excellent musicians.

you can only really give credit to the rhythm section for doing a great job at playing what Marr wrote. The bass lines that Andy Rourke played were the driving force in The Smiths (take a song like "This Charming Man" for example... ). The guitar usually just danced around the melodies that the bass was playing to provide "atmosphere" most of the time. I think Marr wrote the bass parts that way so he could do all of the things he did with the guitar in that band, instead of being the driving force in the music and just having the bass mirror the guitar like a lot of rock bands. That's one of the reasons why I like them so much.
I also love the fact that Morrissey can go from something as funny as "A boy in the bush is worth two in the hand.... I think I can help you get through your exams" to something like "and in the darked underpass, I thought "oh god, my chance has come at last", but then a strange fear gripped me and I just couldn't ask..." I think it's too bad that some people that I -know- would really appreciate The Smiths have heard songs like "Girlfriend in a Coma" and "How Soon is Now" (a song that even -I- never really feel the need to hear ever again), and surmise that they don't like that band. Most of the people I know that are fans of The Smiths wrote them off in that same way.
