The smiths are very not crap.

I always felt that Andy Rourke was the finest musician in a band of excellent musicians. Morrissey's fine and fits the music, but I kinda feel about The Smiths the way I feel about Zeppelin--I'll put up with the dodgy singer because I love the music so much.

funny to see this resurrected...

autumn is coming, the days are getting shorter, i'm starting to get melancholy ... nothing better for this pre-autumn malaise than the smiths, early rem (like, nothing after reckoning), and some good dark beer. rogue mocha porter or some such...

the smiths devastated me in highschool and they're still pretty a-ok in my book. not crap.

Yeah, you can add the Who to that list for me in place of Led Zeppelin as I like Mr. Plant.

What exactly does "ponce" mean? Morrissey has been referred to as a "ponce", and his antics have been called "ponce" numerous times in this thread. I can't for the life of me figure out what it means.

A city of southern Puerto Rico southwest of San Juan. It is an agricultural trade and distribution center. Population: 189,317.

n : someone who procures customers for whores (in England they call a pimp a ponce)

As far as I know, Morrissey is not a city in Peurto Rico, nor is he a pimp. Is this an English slang thing that I don't get? Or did we mean "pomp"?

dictionary.com wrote:pomp ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pmp)
n.
Dignified or magnificent display; splendor: the solemn pomp of a military funeral.
Vain or ostentatious display.

Just curious.

I wouldn't go that far, but I found/find it impossible to believe that Moz and Marr could in all honesty deny that the rhythm chaps didn't bring anything significant to the Smiths table. Ridiculous. The bass lines are so, so good. The drumming is air-tight. The bass and drums together is simply brilliant.

The Smiths = NC

i can understand why someone might not care for them at all, but i think they were, on the whole, simply fantastic.

my favorite Smiths compilation is the B-side to The World Wont Listen. it's perfect.

and when i hear songs like "Rubber Ring", "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "Girl Afraid", "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "Rush and A Push & The Land Is Ours", "Still Ill" etc., i don't feel so ashamed for having a mood disorder. if anythign i feel vindicated; sometimes there are perfectly good reasons for having one's head in a sling.

hang the DJ, indeed.

Is that really the case? I had no idea that Marr dictated the bass/drum parts...

you can only really give credit to the rhythm section for doing a great job at playing what Marr wrote. The bass lines that Andy Rourke played were the driving force in The Smiths (take a song like "This Charming Man" for example... ). The guitar usually just danced around the melodies that the bass was playing to provide "atmosphere" most of the time. I think Marr wrote the bass parts that way so he could do all of the things he did with the guitar in that band, instead of being the driving force in the music and just having the bass mirror the guitar like a lot of rock bands. That's one of the reasons why I like them so much.

I also love the fact that Morrissey can go from something as funny as "A boy in the bush is worth two in the hand.... I think I can help you get through your exams" to something like "and in the darked underpass, I thought "oh god, my chance has come at last", but then a strange fear gripped me and I just couldn't ask..." I think it's too bad that some people that I -know- would really appreciate The Smiths have heard songs like "Girlfriend in a Coma" and "How Soon is Now" (a song that even -I- never really feel the need to hear ever again), and surmise that they don't like that band. Most of the people I know that are fans of The Smiths wrote them off in that same way.

i agree with all of the above -- "how soon is now" is pretty weak and drags on far too long. the slide guitar/wammy/wahteverthefuck is almost nauseating, like bad ecstasy and ripple.

this band the smiths, they are NOT CRAP!

check out live album 'rank' (not to be confused with the game of the same name). it pretty much slays the notion that they were standard brit-fop by rawking like the proverbial motherfucker.

morrissey, conversely, is CRAP!

(i know this is lame but i would go and see a band called 'proverbial motherfucker'.)
