My first record was Kiss's Destroyer. It was 1980ish, I was 3-4ish. I didn't actually pay for it, my mom ordered it for me from Columbia House. I still have it. I colored in their faces on the cover with a blue Bic, and there's an X on the label on side two that my mom put on it in purple magic marker so I would know which side 'Shout it Out Loud' was on.

Hey, I'll be damned. The first album I went to a record store and bought with my own money was also Kiss' Destroyer. I bought it on cassette in 1987, when I was 8 years old. I still like this album, though not nearly as much.

Before that, my folks bought records for me sometimes. The ones I remember most clearly were Thriller, some Jackson 5 hits compilation, and No Parking on the Dance Floor by Midnight Star. Oh, and a bunch of cringe-inducing singles: "Life in One Day" by Howard Jones, "Miss Me Blind" by Culture Club, and Paul Hardcastle's "N-n-n-n-n-nineteen." Good god.

my first recording was a record called "The Teddy Bears Picnic" that accompanied a hardcover book going by the same name (perhaps you've heard of it).

but the first tape i ever got was Run DMC's "Raising Hell" when i was seven. it was Christmas of '86. my brother, who's four years my elder, got the Circle Jerks IV. my dad was a high school art teacher so he had contact with all sorts of fringe types and they'd recommended these two tapes, both good choices.

i think my ex-girlfriend's first tape was Tiffany.

I just referenced this when talking to a friend last week.

Another friend of mine used to sing the "When the teddy bears have their picnic" part to the tune of the chorus from "Dr. Feelgood".
