"If you are born into poverty in the US," said one of its authors, "you are actually more likely to remain in poverty than in other countries in Europe, the Nordic countries, even Canada, which you would think would not be that different."

BBC Article on US Study of the reality of "American Dream"

I'm interested what our American friends here on EA make of this article and study. No, "Huu Ahh" jingoistic comments, please, but off topic comment regarding favourite cheese etc. are fine.

I'm not sure that applies anymore. Have you tried to get a Green Card lately?

For a while the States served as an ideal outlet for the European demographic pressure cooker. As of now they are of no use to us anymore...

i think this country is a work in progress

y'all have many hundreds of years on us

we're still in that pesky empire-building phase. you know, the one that engenders worldwide fear and hatred and saps the country's resources. we haven't been at it all that long, in historical terms. perhaps once the attempt has failed, we can get on with the job of making this a better place to live.

there are certainly much worse places to live on the planet, but until we realize that forcibly exporting america is not the same thing as encouraging democracy, i'm afraid we're doomed to tread some water.

perceptive: the comment that holding onto the 'american dream' is harder yet than achieving it
