5Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Total NOT CRAP.
Though apart from Kirk and Dolphy, the landscape seems mighty bleak.

Kirk and Dolphy are indeed masters of the jazz flute. But this thread overlooks the true genius, James Newton. Check his Axum LP on ECM.

And Dolphy's flute version "Glad to be Unhappy" makes me cry like a schoolgirl...

7This thread was inspired by "Anchorman," no?
Flute was Dolphy's worst instrument but I still love his flute playing.
Barely N/C.

Thanks for the recommendation--I'll have to check that out. A bit of Googling shows some info on his use of flute multiphonics, which sounds quite interesting. Also, there's this--the Beastie Boys sample him and don't pay, the judge claims his piece can't be protected because of the un-notated multiphonics, and the Beastie Boys countersue for nearly $500,000 to cover legal fees. Fucked up.
