1. These Australian voting public! For the first time since the early 80s, the largely forgetful Aussie voter saw fit to give the Liberal Party control of both houses of parliament. (The Liberal Party of Australia is a watered-down hybrid of the US Republican Party and certain neo-con values of Britain's New Labor.) In our recent Federal election, a small but committed group of ultra-conservative Christians called Family First managed to squeeze out enough votes to get a single Senate seat. Although the Liberals have a clear majority, there are enough Liberal senators to forge small alliances to force change in legislation to meet their needs with either demented fundamentalist Christians or any other concerted conservative group. As a result, we can expect a wave of privatization and full public sales of government resources, a revamped industrial relations amendment that gives employers the right to froce employees onto individual contracts that deny them the right to collective bargaining, and the possibility of repealing "controversial" legislation (abortion rights for women, genetically modified crops, genetic research funding, freedom of information legislation etc.)

2. The OZ Rock sound. JBR put it quite succinctly in his post http://www.electrical.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2335 . I would like to add to this my displeasure with the way it interferes with how bands start hearing their recordings, and also that the phenomenon is not unique to major labels. Mostly, Australian rock bands are misrepresented on their recordings, due to a distaste for dynamics and a heavy emphasis on compression/gating/limiting and digital signal processing to achieve the most sterile sound possible. I personally blame Sony Studios 301 and their mixing/mastering credo that is hypnotically reinforced to their assistants and interns.

Not much else really.

Also, being reprimanded by my boss for not smiling enough. This is after a psycho customer went off on me for something that was my boss' fault, then called my boss to complain about me and my boss (who wasn't there) takes the side of this obviously emotionally crippled freak because, hey, the customer is always right. And then he tells me to smile more.

It's no fun having nightmares about work.

Running sound for cover bands with huge, mindless followings really makes me mad. Being associated with said bands makes me even angrier...

Being forced into the above situation by economic circumstances pisses me off more than anything...

This reminds me of a previous job as a telephone customer service jock. One fine day my supervisor at the time noted the increasing monotony in my voice, and asked me if it weren't to much trouble to "smile through the phone more."

He was not impressed when I placed the telephone receiver on the desk, smiled and thrust my face onto it two or three times. "Nope. Doesn't work...". I got 'counselling' for that one.

Maybe you can find a doctor who is willing to sign a certificate stating that you have a condition that prevents you from smiling at work - namely a brain. That'll learn 'em.

Also annoying: People who ask a question (often a yes or no question), and without waiting for a response, list your choices for you. My temporary employee, when he asks a customer if they need a bag, he says, "Do you wanna bag, yes, no?" This is a native English speaker, mind you. Drives me nuts. I've heard it here and there from other places. Why do people do this?!

ebay. stupid fucking ebay.

so, most people who use ebay advertise (as i did) something like this:

"boss drum machine. not akai or alesis."

so they withdraw my auction an hour before it closes with 3 bids on it, because i said that it wasn't akai or alesis. shit loads of people do this to throw up more hits on their auctions, so why is it my auction that they choose in their infinate wisdom to close?

why aren't they sorting out the people who are trying to rip us off with fake pro-audio listings? surely this would be a better use of their time.

The poor fucker has to speak in front of the whole crowd (they are never told in advance, just to make it more 'fun'). I've become very good at missing the meetings (haven't been to one in over a month now).
