4I've seen Calexico a good handful of times now and they're not that on top of it live (IMHFO). However, their records always sound great, and John Convertino is an amazing drummer.
Club Congress just had their 20th, and seeing Howe Gelb/Giant Sand/Band of Blacky Ranchette was more of a treat. I've _never_ been disappointed w/ a Howe Gelb set. The big highlight was seeing Bob Log III and Doo Rag (!) reunited.

6musically they always seem intriguing. His vocals and just the timbre are really bland . not crap though.

That's how they started out (they were called Spoke before)- now it's usually a full band, sometimes if it's in a bigger place they'll have the mariachis.

At first they were almost pretty weird.
Joey sang through a tremolo pedal. He was into some of the "lo-fi" indie stuff that was going on at the time.

I was also at this concert (with someone called Matthias, too ... I know answers to questions only he would know the answers to, so can easily check if you and he are one and the same) and wondered what the guitar was. He gets a really great tone from it whatever it is. They always go down a storm in Strasbourg, especially one time a few years back with Freakwater, Amor/Belham, and the mariachis. A friend of mind interviewed Joey Burns before the set and he insisted she interview the mariachi guys. The lead crooner fell for her in a big way (despite her slender knowledge of Mexican love ballads), dedicated half the set to her, and was undoubtedly disapointed she didn't take him him up on his offer of a private audience backstage after the set.
I feel really fond of this group without falling for them in a big way. They're maybe a little too clean and healthy, but definately a not crap. Un peu comme je me sens pour Yo La Tengo qui joue a la laterie dans une quinzaine. Matthias II, t'y va, toi?
