pitchers and catchers report

Hmm... that's a lot of money for a guy like me... are you saying that if the Red Sox win the World Series I owe you $100, and if they don't you owe me $100??? I'll take that bet any day... But, I think the odds are a little too much in my favor for you to agree to that...

It must really be the end times... people talking weather or not the Cubs or the Red Sox are going to win the World Series...

Amazing...

All we need is for "W" to win again, and the world will be really over...

pitchers and catchers report

Here we go:

Yankees / Red Sox

1st base:
Kevin Millar/David Ortiz vs. Travis Lee/Jason Giambi: Giambi is an average fielder, so are Millar and Ortiz, Travis Lee is an outstanding fielder, Giambi is a better power, average, and RBI hitter than Millar or Ortiz. Edge Yankees

2nd base:
Pokee Reese vs. Enrique Wilson: both are poor hitter. Overall Reese is a little worse than Wilson with the bat. Both are good fielders - overall Reese is a little better. Edge nobody

ShortStop:
Nomar vs. Jeter: Did Nomar even show up to the playoffs last year. Nomar is fragile, injury prone, and not very clutch, and makes more errors than Jeter. Edge Yankees

Third base:
No need to even discuss it. Edge Yankees

Catcher:
Despite having ONE career year, the day Jason Varitek ever dreams he can shine Posada's shoes, he better wake up and apologize. Edge Yankees offensively and defensively

Left Field:
Manny Ramirez vs. Hideki Matsui. Manny is a power guy and hits for average. Hideki is an RBI machine. Matsui about a million times more mobile in the field than Ramirez. Edge nobody

Center Field:
Johnny Damon vs. Bernie Williams/Kenny Lofton: no contest. Damon is a decent fielder and a lousy hitter. Bernie and Lofton exceed his skills in any arena. Edge Yankees

Right Field:
Trot Nixon vs. Gary Sheffield. HA...a laugher. Edge Yankees

Closer:
Keith Foulke vs. Mariano Rivera: the best closer in the AL last year vs. the best closer EVER? Edge Yankees.

Starting rotation:
Kevin Brown - great pitcher, lower ERA last year than any Red Sox pitcher (I believe - not sure about Pedro's ERA) but fragile health wise
Pedro Martinez - great pitcher, low ERA, fragile health-wise, and never lasts more than 6 innings
John Leiber - 20 game winner coming off injury. Questionably health
Curt Schilling - rode Randy Johnson's coattails, coming off injury. Questionable health
Jose Contreres: one day he's brilliant, the next he's getting bombed. Unpredictable
Tim Wakefield: one day he's brilliant, the next he's getting bombed. Unpredictable
Mike Mussina: great, solid pitcher.
Derek Lowe: above average, solid pitcher.
Byung Yung Kim : yes, the Sox are experimenting with Byung Yung Kim (Korean for "THREE RUN HOME RUN") as a starter to fill their 5th spot
Javier Vasquez : power pitcher, great ERA, unproven on a big stage.
EDGE - if anything it goes to the Yankees, but I'll give Schilling the benefit of the doubt and call it a toss up.

OVERALL EDGE: By far, Yankees.
